Top 9 Instagrammers Talk Makeup Favorites and Tips

October 8, 2018 By Catherine R. Adams 2 Comments

Instagram has a huge influence in the beauty and lifestyle industry, and a lot of instagrammers who first started as bloggers have created great accounts that focus on makeup, style, and everything in between. We decided to talk to 9 top beauty and lifestyle instagrammers and ask them all about their Instagram career, favorite makeup products, and some top instagrammer makeup tips.

In this article, you will hear from BeautyCalypse, BlissomaSkin, BritBeautyBlog, FashionLush, frank_bod, Girlvsglobe, LouellaReese, TheCubicleChick, and TheFashionTag.

1. When did you start posting on Instagram and why?

In April 2016. At some point, I decided to turn off comments on beautycalypse.com to give it a more editorial feel, so I needed a place to hang with the community and to connect with the industry.

2. What are your favorite makeup products?

My favourite make-up product is a tool, and this tool are my fingertips: soft, versatile and easy to clean 😀 Seriously though — I advocate product-independent beauty routines; massages, as well as face gym are my preferred treatments. Lost on a desert island, with my all-organic beauty bag gone as my gift to the ocean? So what, I could still maintain my skin care rut.

3. What is the best makeup tip you could give?

Experiment! I love sharing my own, mildly eccentric beauty looks to prove you can have alllllll the fun while still looking professional and while choosing Earth-friendly ingredients and packagings (and obviously staying mindful, as in: considering hygiene and safety).

1. When did you start posting on Instagram and why?

I’m often a little late to new technology, so it was actually one of my younger staff members that offered to start up an Instagram account for us in probably 2014. We established a company account then and I also got a personal one for myself so I could learn the software as well. Instagram was already quite popular by then and my staff esthetician thought it would be fun and just a good opportunity to communicate with our clients in a new way to document her role at the company and the work we are doing.

I have since taken over the company account. Beauty is a visually focused market so that translates well to Instagram. It’s great to give people peeks into the work we do to make the products we love and also provide education in an enticing, easy format. It’s faster to post educational information than a blog post, and it gets seen more easily. People are spending a lot of time in their IG feeds, so fundamentally you go where the people are.

2. What are your favorite makeup products?

My favorite makeup products are still pencil eyeliners and blush, though I admit highlighter has joined the ranks of my favorite essentials as well over the last few years. I really keep things quite simple and my eyes are one of my better features.

Eyeliner allows me a bit of extra drama without a lot of work or looking overly made up, and pencil always looks quite soft and natural. The blush and highlighter, of course, just give that little bit of healthy flush and glow that is so sought after. I don’t use much though, and I really like the skin itself to look great on its own. Makeup should ideally be just the icing on the cake the way I see things.

3. What is the best makeup tip you could give?

I’m not huge on putting a lot of foundation or concealer on skin unless someone is heading to a photo shoot. In my opinion, real, healthy skin looks better than any makeup product ever could. If someone has serious discoloration or rosacea I can see why foundation has a lot of confidence-boosting properties, but a lot of people are wearing way too much foundation overall and it just looks cakey and actually dulls the look of the face because the product is not alive, so it just doesn’t have the same radiance as skin.

The camera sees differently than the human eye, so what looks good in photos is not necessarily what looks good in person. That means that the look that is amazing on Instagram may look way overdone and very fake in person. As a skincare brand owner, I would tell people to invest way more time and energy in their skincare routine to get their skin healthy, and then use minimal makeup to just enhance in spots. This results in a much more appealing look face-to-face with other people. Makeup is just not a substitute for good skincare.

1. When did you start posting on Instagram and why?

I was late to Instagram – all my blog friends were on it and kept telling me how great it was, but I didn’t want to give up my Blackberry in favour of an iPhone! When I did start, about 2 years after everyone else, I regretted waiting. So, I guess I’ve been on it about 5 years.

2. What are your favorite makeup products?

I test so many products that it’s hard to have favourites but at the moment I’m loving Guerlain Mascara, Clarins foundation and Sisley lipglosses.

3. What is the best makeup tip you could give?

Don’t think you have to pay over the odds for good make up – budget brands are ruling the universe at the moment with great products that work as well, if not better sometimes, than their luxury counterparts.

Probably 5 years ago! I created an Instagram account to promote the content on my blog, Fashionlush.

2. What are your favorite makeup products?

It Cosmetics ‘bye bye undereye’ & ‘your skin but better’ CC cream; Artist Couture ‘coco bling’ highlight; Milk Makeup KUSH mascara.

1. When did you start posting on Instagram and why?

Frank Body started their Instagram back in 2013 before launching the first Original Coffee Scrub as a free marketing tool to interact with our audience. The first Instagram we created got shut down because it was too inappropriate. If you follow the brand, you know we like to push the boundaries.

2. What are your favorite makeup products?

We like to use all natural make up products. However, we are big believers in enhancing your current features instead of hiding them so products like our Illuminator and Lip Tints are key products in our make up bag.

3. What is the best makeup tip you could give?

Look after your skin with good skincare, and then follow with natural make up. Skin first. Make up second.

1. When did you start posting on Instagram and why?

I started posting on Instagram back in 2015. At first, I just wanted it to complement my blog, but now it’s completely taken over as one of my favourite social media platforms – second only to YouTube.

2. What are your favorite makeup products when traveling?

My favourite makeup travel products are the same whether I’m travelling or not, with one exception – solid shampoo. The bars from Lush are incredible, they smell great and work a treat!

3. What is the most important makeup/fashion tip you ever received?

Less is more. Nobody actually gave me that tip, it’s something I figured out as I got older. But looking back at how I used to dress as a teenager, I probably could have used the advice a lot sooner. No shame though – I’m glad I got it out of my system when I was younger.

1. When did you start posting on Instagram and why?

I started posting on Instagram in 2013 – to share my dog Reese Poppy and daily outfit of the days. I really just did it for fun!

2. What are your favorite makeup products?

I absolutely love Jane Iredale – all of my make up (primer, tinted moisturizer, eyeshadow, and eyebrow gel) is from their line except for my mascara. For mascara, I swear by IT Cosmetics Superhero mascara. It is a game changer!

3. What is the best makeup/fashion tip you could give?

Be you! Stay authentic to your personal style. Whether it’s with make up or fashion. The confidence you have rocking what you love shines through!

1. When did you start posting on Instagram and why?

Long time ago. I basically loved the photo filters and documenting my beauty and style looks. These days I invest a little bit more time and effort into pics, and rarely use the Instagram filters, but I still enjoy sharing both my personal and blogging stuff (which of course tend to overlap).

2. What are your favorite makeup products?

Can’t live without mascara and lip balm.

3. What is the best makeup/fashion tip you could give?

When you can’t be bothered to do anything fancy just do bold lips. I loooove red lips and I think they’re the best accessory ever, and look amazing on anyone, just depends on finding the right shade. Also, skin is the most important thing for me: keeping it hydrated and glowing (I drink a lot of water and always take my makeup off at night). And last tip: don’t pluck your eyebrows! They will never be the same.
